Whatsapp Voice Call

You can make voice calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Much like other apps like Viber and Skype, Whatsapp calling service is free. It uses data connection to offer VoIP services. The data usage is subject to charges based on your current data plan. It means this feature has nothing to do with voice calling ability of your network. It works much like Skype and other competitors. Simply speaking, you will not be charged to make a call. If you are using Wi-Fi connection or Whatsapp call, the network carrier like Vodafone, AT&T etc. will not charge.

Pros of Whatsapp Call

With Whatsapp calling feature, you will find three new tabs – Chats, Calls and Contacts. In Calls tab, you will see recent calls. Remember that Whatsapp Call is only for voice calls. You cannot do video call with it. To make video calls, you still have to use Skype and other apps.

Whatsapp Call works just like your normal dialing. All you have to put your phone to your ear and speak. However, you can connect only to your Whatsapp contacts. It means you can call any iOS, Windows or Android user if they have Whatsapp installed. You cannot contact users on other platforms. Whatsapp call charges are based on your data use, whether you are calling in India or making international calls. The charges are roughly the same, no matter where you are calling.

Cons of Whatsapp Calling

You cannot call anyone who is not on Whatsapp. You can call only from Whatsapp to Whatsapp. Although Whatsapp Web is integrated to the Whatsapp on your phone, it doesn’t support Whatsapp calling. So, you cannot check calls on web version and you also cannot make a call from Whatsapp Web. When text chats are secure and integrated, it doesn’t mean that voice calls are secured with end-to-end encryption.

How Much Data Does It Take for Whatsapp Calling?

You can make Whatsapp call to other users for free. When you make Whatsapp call for a minute, it charges around 0.15 MB to 0.2 MB if you are using 3G data. This way, a call for 5 minutes will consume across 1 MB of data. On 3G network, it gives better call quality. On 2G, the calling has a significant amount of lag. Whatsapp calling on 2G is also expensive. It costs around 0.35MB for one minute that is quite higher than 3G. Without data plans, the standard rates are 4 paisa per 10 KB on 3G and 10 paisa per 10 KB on 2G. It roughly charges Re. 1/min of call on 3G and Rs. 2.5/min on 2G.

The data usage is tracked using a calculation app and there was no major difference between consumption of data on Wi-Fi or 3G. The data usage must cost below the cost of phone call. Please keep in mind that it is not a scientific data by any means. It is just for your rough estimation.

Whatsapp Calling vs. Others

It doesn’t give smoother experience than Viber that has been offering VoIP calls already. Whatsapp calling is not that bad. You should expect no-fuss, hassle-free experience.
